Corn husk dolls are traditional Native American toys created from the dried leaves ('husk') of a corn cob. There are a variety of legends regarding why corn husk dolls lack faces.

According to mythology, one of the Three Sisters, the Spirit of Corn, created a doll out of her husks to entertain youngsters. The doll, who had a lovely face, began to spend less time with children and more time thinking about her own beauty. The doll's face was removed as a result of her vanity.

Many times corn husk dolls are created for the Lammas Day (Anglo-Saxon hlaf-mas, 'loaf-mass'). This is the first harvest celebration of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, celebrated on August 1st.
